Carles Coll, world champion of 200 meter breaststroke in short course

The swimmer from Tarragona also finished fifth in the 100 medley final

This Friday, the Spanish Carles Coll won the gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke during the World Short Course Swimming Championships, which are being held in Budapest (Hungary), thanks to his record of 2:01.55 in the final.

At the Duna Arena in the Hungarian capital, the player from Tarragona started on lane number 2 and with the fifth best record of the competitors. Even so, he won ahead of the Russian Kirill Prigoda, second with 2:01.88, and the Japanese Yamato Fukasawa, bronze winner with his time of 2:02.01.

An hour or so later, Coll faced the 100 meter medley final from lane number 6 and with the swimmers’ fourth best time. Having achieved a new national record in the semi-finals, he began this ultimate race for the podium with just 0.60 reaction time.

The Catalan was third after the first turn (10.25) and also after the second (23.04), but he finished the test in 51.52 to occupy fifth position. The Swiss Noè Ponti fulfilled his favoritism and won the gold (50.33), the Austrian Bernhard Reitshammer took silver (51.11) and the Brazilian Caio Pumputis won the bronze (51.35).
