Ecuadorian cyclist Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) won the seventeenth stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday, contested between Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux and Superdévoluy over 177.8 kilometers, being the strongest of a large breakaway that had the permission of the peloton and leader Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates).
Richard Carapaz, in his fourth Tour de France, achieved his first stage victory in a French round in which he finished third and climbed onto the podium in Paris in 2021 but which still owed him a victory, although in this same edition he did wear the leader’s yellow jersey in the fourth stage, for just one day.
And the Ecuadorian, just days away from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he will not be able to defend his gold from Tokyo 2020, redeemed himself from the breakaway and against names of stature such as Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla), second, or the Spaniard Enric Mas (Movistar Team), third.
In the fight for the general classification, the yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar took a strong lead in the final metres and put 2 seconds ahead of the two-time reigning champion and second-placed Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), although the person who had the most fun in this stage was the third-placed contender, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), who crossed the finish line 10 and 12 seconds ahead of the Slovenian and the Dane, respectively, and is moving closer to second place.
