Former soccer player Claudio Caniggia, runner-up in the world with Argentina in Italy 1990 and winner of three titles with the albiceleste team, testified before the Justice on Tuesday after being accused of sexual abuse by his ex-wife and mother of his children, Mariana Nannis.
Caniggia, 55, denied the charges and announced that he will denounce his ex-partner, with whom he was married for more than 33 years, and the witnesses for false testimony, according to Argentine media with access to the judicial file.
In February 2020, Nannis reported that in 2018 her ex-husband had raped her in a hotel room in Buenos Aires. “When I wanted to leave, she told me: ‘If you go out that door, I’m going to kill you, you son of a bitch,'” said Nannis, who also maintained that Caniggia hit her repeatedly.
The former striker, who played for River Plate, Boca Juniors, Atalanta, Roma and Benfica, among other clubs, and who scored the goal against Brazil in Italy 1990 that qualified Argentina for the quarterfinals (0-1), denied having abused, hit or threatened his ex-partner.
