Canada returns to a World Cup 36 years later

MADRID, 28 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canadian team has sealed its ticket to the Qatar 2022 World Cup after beating Jamaica (4-0) on the thirteenth day of the third round of CONCACAF qualifying, and will be in a World Cup event for the first time after 36 years of absence.

Since Mexico 1986, the North American team has not stepped foot in a World Cup final phase, and this year they will be able to play it for the second time after their victory at Toronto’s BMO Field thanks to goals from Cyle Larin, Tajon Buchanan, Junior Hoilett and own goals by Adrian Mariappa.

Already in the 13th minute, Larin took advantage of a pass from Stephen Eustaquio to beat Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake and make it 1-0, and Buchanan, just before the break, increased the count by collecting a ball in the area.

Hoilett joined the party with another strike in the 82nd minute and Mariappa closed it out with an own goal in the 88th minute before celebrations broke out in Toronto.

Meanwhile, at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, a hat-trick by Chelsea striker Christian Pulisic guided the United States against Panama (5-1); The North American team, virtually classified by goal difference, could secure its pass for the World Cup in Costa Rica this Wednesday, the same day that Mexico will seek its ticket against El Salvador.

A draw against the Salvadoran team would be enough for the ‘Tri’ after winning this morning with a solitary goal by Edson Álvarez against Honduras (0-1), while Costa Rica also maintains hope after beating El Salvador (1-2). ) with goals from Anthony Contreras and Joel Campbell.
