Campazzo and Madrid activate their Super Cup mode against Barça

The Clásico was played in different parts of the country until the white team’s outcome to reach the final in Murcia

MADRID, 21 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Real Madrid beat Barça (89-83) this Saturday in the first semi-final of the Endesa Super Cup that is being held at the Palacio de los Deportes in Murcia, a Clásico that had good moments for both teams but ended in white.

Facundo Campazzo, MVP a year ago on this same stage, led his team (18 points and 33 PIR) and was also decisive with a steal that opened the gap for Chus Mateo’s team in the last minute. Madrid, champion of the last six Super Cups, will once again seek to start the season with a title in this Sunday’s final against Unicaja Malaga or the host UCAM Murcia.

The first Clásico started with 20 minutes tied. Real Madrid threatened to break away in the second quarter, but Barça responded after a time-out to overcome an eight-point deficit and go ahead at half-time (41-42).

Peñarroya’s signing was noticeable in the defensive intensity of the first half, although the signings or rookies in this highlight of European basketball did not shine too much. Rathan-Mayes did, with a good contribution from the start to get Chus Mateo’s men into the game, and Serge Ibaka, together with Campazzo and Musa.

The Blaugrana dominated the rebound but began to lose balls and give Madrid the opportunity to take control, something that they eventually achieved in the second quarter. The Whites found success from three points, with Abalde, Campazzo and Llull, but Darío Brizuela burst onto the scene with three baskets from outside the arc.

Between him, the pace of Satoransky and Jabari Parker, who went into the break with 12 points, Barça went into the locker room in good form. However, on the return, they did not follow that script and it was the Madrid team that took control in the third quarter (67-61).

Hezonja was the most successful, with a collective game by the Whites that was not enough for a Barça team that was ten points down. The rebound that they had in the first quarter left Peñarroya’s men a bit abandoned and, despite Abrines’ awakening, Madrid came close to victory again, this time with 10 minutes to go.

Ibaka, on his return to Spain 12 years later, was a bit more intimidating in the paint, but with his second unit, Madrid could not hold on to their advantage. Campazzo’s return, in his connection with Tavares, once again levelled the score in a tight ending that was decided by a steal from Vesley by the Argentine.

The Czech, with little rhythm after overcoming appendicitis, was out of tune and Peñarroya’s team died on the shore. The new Barça coach is exciting in Barcelona due to his past and his method, but for the moment, ‘Facu’, three times MVP of the Super Cup, and Madrid, ten times champion of the tournament, have a lot more work ahead of them and extended their love affair in Murcia.
