FC Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has assured that winning the Spanish Super Cup this Sunday against Real Madrid would be “extra motivation” and confirmation that they are going “in the right direction”, as well as expressing his wish that the Barça squad “get used to” winning titles again.
“We come from a time in which we have not won titles, the last one was the Copa del Rey in La Cartuja. Since then there have been many changes in the club, new players have come, people who have risen… It would be a motivation extra to continue doing things well and to know that we are going in the right direction. We want to continue winning and for people to get used to it, which is what the club deserves”, he declared at a press conference.
In this sense, he affirmed that ambition and desire come “as standard”. “To play in a team of a team of such a high level as FC Barcelona we already have them. We are 90 minutes away from being able to win a title and we must think about it individually. The time has come and we are prepared”, he indicated. “Both teams should be very hungry. We are elite players and we are here to win games, finals and titles. Many things influence us and we want to keep everything under control. Hopefully we can be superior and win the final,” he continued.
“Beyond beating Real Madrid, which is especially exciting and is a great team, we have to focus on ourselves and value reaching a final and being able to win it. Being able to win a title after a long time without achieving it, after many changes , of players and a new coach… We hope it helps everyone to gain experience and drive to continue winning”, he continued.
In the event of winning the title, the Barca midfielder would lift his first trophy as team captain. “It’s one more motivation, but we have to go step by step. We have to do what we know and be better. Hopefully it can be my first title as captain and I can lift the trophy,” he stated.
Regarding the duel against the Madrid team, he recalled that there will be times when “the psychological” will be important. “There are many factors that influence; we have to be very involved in the game, talking a lot, very motivated, because Real Madrid can create danger in any play. Hopefully we can have all aspects under control and be a strong team, because I think that we are on the right track,” he said.
“Real Madrid, apart from the individualities it has, is a team that takes great advantage of the aerial game and counters. They are capable of, without dominating the game, dominating both areas, which is what matters in football. They have players for it”, continued.
He also assured that Real Betis and Real Madrid “are very different teams” and that he does not expect the same type of match. “Betis plays with a different style and game system. Against Real Madrid we have to be very careful so that they don’t go against, where they are very dangerous, and be forceful in the areas. Madrid is not a team that need to dominate a lot, sometimes he allows himself to be dominated and creates chances”, he pointed out, explaining that winning by suffering “is one more step in the growth of this team”.
Finally, Busquets assured that he has not yet “decided” what he will do in the future or if he will leave Barça at the end of the season. “The important thing is the present and I am focused on the final,” he said. “I haven’t decided yet and there’s nothing new, but I wouldn’t have said it at a press conference either. When the time comes, we’ll see. Don’t ask me anymore because I’m not going to say it. I always put the things of the team before my decisions personal,” he stressed.
“I don’t like to talk about the legacy that I can leave. I have always tried to do the best for the team and for my teammates, to try to help, for everyone to shine and for the ball to reach them in the best circumstances”, he concluded.
