Brooks Koepka wins the PGA, his fifth ‘major’

MADRID, 22 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The American golfer Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship, his second ‘Grand Slam’ of the season, with a solid last day in which he kept the lead ahead of the American Scottie Scheffler and the Norwegian Viktor Hovland.

Koepka, one of the visible heads of LIV Golf, the Saudi circuit in dispute with the PGA and the DP World Tour, made good the spectacular Saturday with which he stormed the lead on a contentious Sunday. The Oak Hill Country Club of Rochester, New York (United States), woke up friendly and remained so.

The assault on the field was continued, with receptive ‘greens’ and many cards under par. Thus, Scheffler, squeezing the Spanish Jon Rahm for the world number one, left five shots under par, while Hovland was heads-up with Koepka until he sent the ball into a ‘bunker’ on the 16th hole.

From there the Norwegian came out, getting closer and closer to something ‘big’, with a ‘double bogey’, while the American made a ‘birdie’. Thus, with two holes ahead, Koepka sealed his third Wanamaker trophy, the fifth ‘major’ after suffering injuries, which he celebrated with two rental strokes on both.

In a local key, the celebration was also for Michael Block, who sealed his emotional week with the ‘Top 15’ and ensuring his presence on the circuit the next course with style, in the hole in one that he made in the 15th. the Spanish, Jon Rahm did not manage to say goodbye with good memories of Oak Hill.

The one from Barrika, who arrived as a favorite after his epic triumph at the Augusta Masters, signed a +1 on his last day (50th). Meanwhile, Pablo Larrazabal, the other Spaniard in contention over the weekend, did not find inspiration either with a final 74 (65th).
