His Tony awards, five in total, were thanks to his performance in works such as the musical ‘Mame’, achieved in 1966. Later, he received the award for ‘Dear World’, in 1975, for ‘Gypsy’, in 1979, for ‘ Sweeney Todd’ and in 2009 for ‘Blithe Spirit’.

In the family, she had a long marriage with fellow actor Peter Shaw, from 1949 until he died in 2003, and gave birth to three children.
