Botín and Trittel, world bronze in 49er

Spain obtains two new country places for Paris 2024 although the absence of wind plays a trick

MADRID, 18 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spaniards Diego Botín and Florian Trittel hung the bronze medal in 49er this Friday in the World Sailing Championship that is taking place in The Hague (Netherlands), where Spain secured another two country places for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Botín and Trittel finished the World Cup third in the 49er after the Medal Race, the only regatta held, and Spain sealed the country places in the men’s and women’s iQFOiL. The day was marked by the lack of wind, with postponement flags during the morning.

The 49ers were the first to hit the water and endured a stoic postponement until the highly anticipated Medal Race could start. Diego Botín and Florian Trittel missed out on silver but did not come down from the world podium, hanging on to the bronze medal.

“It has been a tough Medal Race for us, but from this end of the championship we are going to learn many things that will give us energy to come stronger to next season and the ultimate goal, which is the Olympic Games,” Botín said in statements provided by the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV).

Without getting out into the water, in the afternoon they began to announce the cancellation of the day’s tests: first for ILCA 6 and 7, followed by the 49er FX Medal Race, the male and female iQFOiL were added and ended with the abandonment for the male and female Formula Kites.

In iQFOiL, Spain confirmed the country places for both the male and female categories. The Top 10 for the male and female iQFOiL Medal Race that will take place this Saturday is defined on Thursday’s classification, with no Spaniards among them. Nacho Baltasar finished eleventh in the men’s category and Pilar Lamadrid twelfth in the women’s category.

In Women’s Formula Kite, the excellent progression of Gisela Pulido during the championship opened up all the possibilities for the Spaniard to overcome the point that separated her from the country’s classification for the class, but the lack of tests closed all the doors and left her in the 16th position overall.

ILCA 6 and 7 are left without a rest day this Saturday to be able to complete their Final Series and define positions for the Medal Race that will be held on Sunday the 10th.
