Boris Becker released from prison and deported to Germany

LONDON, Dec. 15 (dpa/EP) –

The German tennis player Boris Becker has been released after spending more than seven months in prison in the United Kingdom and has been deported to Germany, his lawyer, Christian-Oliver Moser, confirmed this Thursday to the ‘dpa’ agency.

“Our client has been released in England and left for Germany today, Thursday. He has served his sentence and is not subject to any criminal law restrictions in Germany,” Moser said in a statement.

At the end of April, a London court sentenced the 55-year-old six-time Grand Slam winner to two and a half years in prison for hiding part of his millionaire assets in his insolvency proceedings. In recent months he was confined in Huntercombe prison, west of the British capital.

Becker has lived in London for years, but does not have British nationality, so he was able to benefit from a rule whereby convicted foreigners can be released after a certain period if they are immediately deported to their country of origin.
However, this implies that the tennis player will not be able to return to his adopted country for the moment.
