Boca Juniors was proclaimed champion of Argentine soccer this Sunday in a dramatic outcome in which they tied (2-2) with Independiente at La Bombonera and came out with the title thanks to River Plate’s victory over Racing Club (1-2) in Avellaneda.
Negro Ibarra’s team won the Professional League for the second year in a row (35th of their record to River’s 37), in an outcome that was played on two pitches. Boca seemed to have the title in their hands when at the beginning of the second half Villa made it 2-1 from a free kick.
Just then, from Avellaneda came the news of the local 1-0, with which Boca could not afford a stumble. The pressure was felt and Vallejo made it 2-2 at the Bombonera. Racing was just as close to the title as Boca, but River made their eternal rival champion starting with 1-1.
Later, Armani saved Galván’s penalty in the 90th minute, to the despair of Gago’s team, and in the long discount, River won the victory through Borja in a counterattack that made Boca champion in a historic outcome in Argentina.
