Best Soccer Managers Who Are Out of Job at the Moment
There is always a lot of talk about the best players and free agents on the market. But often overlooked parts of every transfer window are the managers who are out of job and looking for a new landing spot. Some of the tacticians currently available can be considered legendary figures of the sport, seeing how they won numerous titles and brought much-needed joy to every fan of the club. But regardless of their influence and legacy, they now find themselves without a proper appointment in the world of soccer.
Here are the best available soccer managers right now.
Ernesto Valverde
Ernesto Valverde is the first name that comes to mind when talking about free managers. The former Barcelona boss has respectable experience, winning three titles and two Greek Cups with Olympiacos and Spanish Super Cup with Athletic Bilbao before being appointed by Barcelona. During his three-year term at Blaugrana, he won two titles, one Spanish Cup and Spanish Supercup. However, he was sacked in January 2020 and has been without a job ever since.
Andre Villas-Boas
Andre Villas-Boas is one of the most eccentric coaches in the world. But that doesn’t make him any less successful. Often hailed as Jose Mourinho’s heir, Villas-Boas won the Portuguese league, Cup, Super Cup, and UEFA Europa League with Porto. After a few unsuccessful spells at Chelsea and Tottenham, he won the Russian Premier League, Cup, and Super Cup with Zenit Saint Petersburg. He’s been out of job since his sack from Marseille in 2021. He’s been tied with a job at Everton, but the Toffees decided to appoint Frank Lampard instead.
Lucien Favre
A name well-known in German Bundesliga, Lucien Favre started his career by promoting Echallens to the second tier and then Yverdon Sport to first-tier in the Swiss Super League. This secured him a job with Zurich, where he managed to win two leagues and one Swiss Cup. When he moved to Bundesliga, he managed Hertha BSC, Borussia Monchengladbach and finally Borussia Dortmund, where he won DFL Super Cup. He was sacked in December 2020.
Frank de Boer
Frank de Boer’s coaching career is almost as impressive as his soccer career. He managed Ajax, Inter Milan, Crystal Palace, Atlanta United, and Netherlands international team. So far, he has four league titles and Johan Cruyff Shield with Ajax, along with Campoenes and U.S. Open Cup with Atlanta United. Unfortunately, the Dutch expert has been out of the job since 2021.
Paulo Fonseca
Paulo Fonseca is a Portuguese expert who won the Portuguese Super Cup with Porto, the Portuguese Cup with Braga and then dominated the Ukrainian Premier League with three consecutive titles with Shakhtar Donetsk. Along with this, he won three Ukrainian Cups and one Super Cup. His last appointment was in Roma, before being sacked in 2021.
Zinedine Zidane
One of the most talked-about managers in recent years has to be Zinedine Zidane. After finishing his incredible playing career, Zizou started managing Real Madrid Castilla before moving to the first team. With Real Madrid, he won three consecutive Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, two La Liga titles, and two Spanish Super Cups. He quit Real Madrid in 2021 and is now mostly tied with a move to French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
