Benjamin Mendy, accused of sex crimes, is released on bail

LONDON, Jan. 7. (PA Media / dpa / EP) –

Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy was released on bail until his next court hearing on January 24, after being charged on August 26 last year with eight serious sexual crimes against five women.

The full conditions of the bail were not given in a public hearing, but Mendy must live in his usual home, should not contact the complainants and will deliver his passport before midnight this Friday.

The French international has been in custody for 134 days, since he was first arrested and charged on August 26 last year. The footballer was due to go to trial this month, but the hearing was postponed, at least, to June 27.

The defendant is charged with eight crimes against five different women, including seven counts of rape involving four women and one count of sexual assault. All of these charges allegedly occurred between October 11, 2020 and August 23, 2021.

Mendy has played for Manchester City since 2017, when he arrived from Monaco, but the Frenchman was suspended by the club after being accused of such crimes.
