The Superior Council of the Belgian Football Federation decided this Friday that there will be neither a League champion nor relegation in the event that the coronavirus forces to cancel the championship before half of the matches have been played, reported the Belgian agency. This body adopted this Friday a series of preventive regulations for the next football season, in anticipation that the coronavirus pandemic may force the cancellation of sports competitions, as happened last season.
From now on, the rules provide that in the event of definitive cessation of the competition due to force majeure “Sports consequences will be set in relation to the classification after the last match played, provided that all teams have played each other at least once and half of the classic phase has been completed.”
In the Belgian first division they must have played at least 17 days and in the second, 14. In the event that this condition is not met and football is canceled before the end of the first round, the season will be canceled and neither champion nor will there be demotions or promotions. The distribution of the European positions would, in that case, be made according to the average performance of the last seasons.
This entity also approved that a club can request the postponement of a match if it has seven players infected with COVID-19 at the same time. The protocol already establishes that a player who tests positive must be excluded from his team for at least seven days and remain isolated.
