Beatrice Chebet breaks the 5km world record in La Cursa dels Nassos in Barcelona

BARCELONA, 31 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Kenyan athlete Beatrice Chebet has broken the world record for the 5 kilometers this Sunday in Barcelona, at the Cursa dels Nassos, with a time of 14:13 with which she surpassed the previous best mark for the distance, and with just 8 seconds margin over the second classified.

Beatrice Chebet, current 5km world champion after the Riga event, surpassed the previous record of 14:29 set by Ethiopian Senbere Teferi in Herzogenaurach in September 2021.

In addition, she also broke the women's world record set in a mixed race of 14:19, achieved by Ethiopian Ejegayehu Taye in the 2021 Cursa dels Nassos.

On this occasion, Taye was second in the Barcelona New Year's Eve event with a time of 14:21, while Lilian Kasait Rengeruk was third with a time of 14:25.

But the great protagonist was Beatrice Chebet, who closed the year with a flourish by winning a high-flying event, since the podium was completed by 5K medalist athletes at the Riga World Athletics Road Championships last October .

Before winning the world 5km title in Riga, Chebet also became world cross country champion in Bathurst in February and won world 5,000m bronze in Budapest in August.

In the men's category, Dominic Lobalu fulfilled the predictions and won the men's 5k of this Cursa dels Nassos, with a time of 13:12 and ahead of Kipkoech Kipruto (13:18) and Abdesamad Oukhelfen, who broke the Catalan record with 13:27.
