MUNICH (GERMANY), June 5. (dpa/EP) –
The president of Bayern Munich, Herbert Hainer, reiterated the clear position of the German club against the departure of striker Robert Lewandowski, despite the public insistence of the Polish player.
“We are lucky not to have financial difficulties. We want to have the best players and Robert is one of the best. That is why I strongly hope that he will also play with us next season,” Hainer told Sunday’s ‘Bild am Sonntag’.
The successor of Uli Hoeness in the presidency of the Bundesliga champion stressed that he supports the president of the board of directors, Oliver Kahn, in his decision to keep Lewandowski. Hainer recalled that the 33-year-old Pole has a contract with Bayern until June 30, 2023.
“And a contract is a contract! Where will we end up if a player can terminate a contract early while we, as a club, would have to pay him in full until the last day of the term? That is an inequality, it cannot be like that,” he said.
Lewandowski recently publicly expressed his desire to change teams. “Today it is clear: my story with Bayern is over. After everything that has happened in recent months, I cannot imagine that a good cooperation will continue,” said the scorer, longed for by FC Barcelona.
Hainer declared himself “surprised” that Lewandowski had chosen to express his position through the media. “I wouldn’t have done it in his place,” he said. However, he added that he does not fear that it will not be possible to face the new season with Lewandowski after these incidents. “Robert is a professional through and through, he wants to play football,” the Bayern president said.
