Baskonia meets at home against a poor Bayern
MADRID, 9 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Baskonia defeated FC Bayern Munich (78-53) this Friday at the Fernando Buesa Arena, on matchday 12 of the Euroleague Regular Phase, after authoritatively solving a comfortable and simple match, against an opponent who, plagued by casualties, he did not give the feeling of being able to hurt Joan Peñarroya’s men.
The team from Vitoria added their seventh victory of the continental campaign and once again showed their strength in front of their fans, against a rival who put a stop to their good run and who chained their eighth European defeat. The good work of Pierria Henry (14 Points) and Matthew Costello (14) was enough to keep the locals seventh and strengthen their playoff options.
Thus, Joan Peñarroya’s men dominated from start to finish and managed to control the feints of reaction from Andrea Trinchieri’s men, thanks mainly to his success in the triple when he needed it, to control a rival supported only by the effort of Andreas Obst (12 points and 6 rebounds).
The team from Vitoria began defending very well, but without success on the rival basket. It took four minutes for Joan Peñarroya’s men to make their debut on the scoreboard, the result of a few moments of trial and error, in which both teams decided to measure their defensive assets. Thus the first quarter ended with a 17-10 scoreline and a bittersweet feeling for the locals.
However, the Baskonista team woke up and went for the game in the second quarter with a great success from Steven Enoch and Pierria Henry. This time, yes, the Basques resorted to their efficiency from the line of three to leave with an advantage of 14 before the break and leave behind the offensive doubts, against a closed defense in the zone like the one raised by Andrea Trinchieri.
After passing through the locker room, both teams threatened to return to the match a lower scoring rhythm, the result of the defensive solidity and the little scoring efficiency that they began to show from one side of the court and the other. Although with an advantage on the scoreboard, Joan Peñarroya’s men did not stop the rebound bleeding, to the benefit of a Gillespie who arrived at the end of the third quarter with 12 sacks.
The German team threatened to make the match long, after two 5-0 runs, but the ineffectiveness from the three-pointer, added to the ineffectiveness of their star player, Cassius Winston (10), allowed the people from Vitoria to maintain the income harvested and reaching the last ten minutes with an advantage of 13 in the light (55-42).
Enoch’s three-pointer as soon as the last set began served as motivation for the Spanish team to retake the initiative on the track and, although the Bavarians threatened to get closer on the scoreboard after Isaac Bonga’s three-pointer, which reduced the lead to 10, the wrist of Thompson and Hommes ended up decanting the match and reducing the risk of a comeback.
