Baskonia escapes the Berlin trap

Baskonia escapes the Berlin trap

Those from Peñarroya get complicated at the end but they sign the first victory in the Euroleague

MADRID, 12 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Baskonia debuted the record of victories this 2023/24 season in the Euroleague by beating Alba Berlin (86-91) this Thursday at home, a victory suffered by the German reaction in the last quarter after the great offensive recital of the Basques.

Joan Peñarroya’s team played with fire in the last quarter, where they conceded a 25-15 lead that came close to costing them the victory. Matt Thomas misplayed a decisive possession so that Alba would have tied the game in the final seconds. Instead of the triple, the forced two-point shot did not go in, without seeking inspiration from Gabriele Procida or Matteo Spagnolo, and Chima Moneke rebounded.

The new Baskonia player was once again fundamental. On the other hand, the dominance of the rebound and the great success of three put the Vitoria team on their way, but the Alba of Spanish coach Israel González rebelled in the last quarter. The match left losses everywhere, but Baskonia, which had fallen in four of its six visits, avoided the Berlin trap.

The youth of the Barça team was close to taking its toll, in a project that needs to grow from the base position. Codi Miller-McIntyre was the one who led the way with 17 points, but Markus Howard did not have a good day. Peñarroya’s team relied on a solid defense, which controlled the locals’ transition.

Losses marked that last quarter that was almost fatal. Baskonia failed in everything it had done well, but got a win to cement everything, which it dominated from the start and brought it closer to 14-25 in the third quarter. The ‘soldier’ Tadas Sedekerskis was the best of the Peñarroya team, with 11 points, 13 rebounds and a PIR of 21, who returned with the first of the European season.
