The Spanish athlete Álex Villar died on Friday at the age of 34 in an accident when he was practicing base jumping in the Punta Calva area, in the municipality of Plan (Huesca).
The Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) received the notice around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Immediately, he informed the 062 headquarters of the Civil Guard of Huesca that there had been an accident involving a base jumper in Punta Calva. A helicopter from the Civil Guard of the Aragon Zone, based in Huesca, GREIM from Boltaña and a doctor from 061, went to the scene of the accident and, after flying over the area, located the victim in a stony channel.
Using a crane cycle, the mountain specialists descended to the exact point where the injured person was, who had injuries incompatible with life.
After notifying the judicial authority, GREIM members proceeded to remove the body and transfer it by Civil Guard helicopter to the Boltaña helisurface and from there for funeral services to the Forensic Anatomical Institute of the Huesca Provincial Hospital. The causes of the accident are under investigation.
Among the achievements of Villar, a native of Madrid who had accumulated more than 1,000 base jumps and 2,000 plane jumps, is having crossed the natural arch of Piedrafita (Huesca) in 2019 at 250 kilometers per hour.
