Barty conquers Melbourne for Australia 44 years later

MADRID, 29 One. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Australian tennis player Ashleigh Barty has conquered the Australian Open, the first ‘Grand Slam’ of the season and the third ‘big’ of her record, after beating the American Danielle Collins in the final this Saturday (6-3, 7- 6(2)), and breaks a 44-year drought for local players.

Since 1978, when Chris O’Neil lifted the title in the women’s category, no other ‘aussie’ tennis player had managed to repeat the title in the individual category, and the number one in the world, also the first Australian finalist in Melbourne since Wendy Turnbull in 1980, went bankrupt this drought completing the perfect tournament.

Thus, she used a single break in the sixth game to win the first set against the North American, who did not take advantage of the only break opportunity she had in the sleeve.

In spite of everything, Barty had to recover from a ‘break’ in the second game of the second set that put him 3-0 down, and the 5-1 with which Collins managed to get ahead after breaking his service again seemed to put the duel on track to the third set.

However, the oceanic won four consecutive games to send the sleeve to the ‘tie-break’, where they prevailed with solvency to add another ‘great’ to the other two already conquered: Roland Garros 2019 and Wimbledon 2021. Ahead, the dream to raise the US Open to triumph at least once in all the ‘Grand Slam’.
