Barça handball remains the undisputed king of the men’s Iberian Super Cup

MADRID, 2 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

FC Barcelona won its third Iberian Men’s Super Cup in the same number of editions this Sunday, this last one after beating Sporting de Portugal 33-38 in the final in a match played at the Vicente Trueba Municipal Pavilion in Torrelavega (Cantabria).

Sporting’s resistance lasted just 10 minutes, having just won their semi-final on penalties (27-27)[0-3]) against BM Torrelavega; meanwhile, the culé team had won the other ‘semi’ by 39-31 against FC Porto. In this sense, as soon as Aleix Gómez, Aitor Ariño and Dika Mem got going, the team trained by Carlos Ortega repeated success. However, the Lisbon team tried to defend strongly and come out quickly.

However, that plan fell through when Barça pushed hard, which they did not take long to do, going into the break with a nine-goal lead (15-24). After the break, the Portuguese team tried to wipe the slate clean, forget about the Barça superiority and fight for the match until the end, looking to take home at least a great try.

Although Sporting were five goals down in the final minutes, Barça did not hesitate to close out a game that they had already taken a good lead in. If Aleix Gómez had been the biggest threat to Sporting’s goal, in the second half Javier Rodríguez took over and Emil Nielsen also shone between the posts for the Blaugranas.
