The Italian rider Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) achieved victory this Sunday in the long MotoGP race of the Italian Grand Prix, the seventh round of the motorcycle World Championship, in an event in which the Spanish Jorge Martín (Ducati) was displaced in the last corner to third position when he was overtaken by the also transalpine Enea Bastianini (Ducati).
Mugello offered a heart-stopping ending. While ‘Pecco’ was almost tasting the checkered flag, Bastianini overtook the Spaniard in the last corner to complete the double for the Ducati Lenovo Team – which this Sunday changed red for blue in tribute to the Day of the Italian Republic – and left with a face of circumstances to the occupants of the Prima Pramac Racing garage.
With this victory, ‘Pecco’ completes a perfect weekend, winning both the sprint and the long race, in both cases starting from fifth place. Martín, who fell on Saturday, had to settle for third place this Sunday, which reduces his lead in the overall standings of the World Championship.
Thus, with 171 points, he is 18 ahead of the two-time world champion, while Marc Márquez (Ducati), who was knocked out of the podium positions in the penultimate lap and finished fourth, is third in the championship, 35 behind Martín. Bastianini is in fourth place, at 57.
In an extraordinary start, ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia went from fifth to first position, gaining four places in just two corners, while poleman Martín had to settle for hanging on to his wheel. In addition, Enea Bastianini (Ducati) surpassed Marc Márquez (Ducati) to place third.
Little by little, Bagnaia was setting a stratospheric pace to distance himself from San Sebastián de los Reyes, who after his fall on Saturday in the sprint did not want to risk any more. Even so, in the final stretch he came dangerously close, but it was not enough to snatch victory at Mugello.
Behind, with six laps to go, the man from Cervera overtook ‘The Beast’ to climb to the bottom of the podium, but just two laps before the checkered flag, a touch between the two returned the Catalan to fourth place. Bastianini was not satisfied, and just a few meters from the checkered flag, Martín also gave the nod to climb into second place.
In addition to Márquez’s fourth place, Pedro Acosta (KTM) finished fifth, Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) was eighth and Alex Márquez (Ducati) ninth. For his part, Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) finished eleventh, just ahead of Raúl Fernández (Aprilia), Alex Rins (Yamaha) finished fifteenth and Pol Espargaró (KTM) seventeenth. Joan Mir (Repsol Honda) suffered a fall and was unable to finish the race.
