The Italian rider Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia (Ducati) achieved victory this Sunday in the MotoGP race of the British Grand Prix, the twelfth round of the Motorcycle World Championship and the first after the summer break, ahead of the Spanish Maverick Viñales (Aprilia ), while Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia), ninth, saved the day and only lost one point to the championship leader, Frenchman Fabio Qartararo (Yamaha).
In a very tight race, with only six seconds between the first and the tenth classified, ‘Pecco’ took command with nine laps to go and guaranteed his second consecutive victory after also winning in Assen in the last round before the break . Viñales, for his part, once again climbed onto a podium that was closed by the Australian Jack Miller (Ducati).
Meanwhile, Aleix knew how to recover from the pain caused by Saturday’s very strong crash in free practice and mitigated Quartararo’s performance with his ninth place, who suffered from degradation problems and could only finish eighth. Even so, he dominates the championship with 22 points over Granollers (158) and 49 over Bagnaia (131).
Returning to action after a 42-day vacation, Frenchman Johann Zarco (Ducati) defended his pole position in a start in which Quartararo climbed two places to second. The one from Nice, however, fell to fifth place after having to serve a ‘long lap penalty’ for his action on Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) in Assen.
Ahead, Zarco’s crash at turn 8 of the fifth lap left the Australian Jack Miller (Ducati) in front of the race, although the privilege lasted only one lap, which took Alex Rins (Suzuki) to take the lead after come back from eleventh place on the grid.
With the Catalan in front ahead of the Italian Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) and the oceanic, Jorge Martín (Ducati) and Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) also presented their candidacy for victory. With nine laps to go, ‘Pecco’ took the lead while the rider from Roses took up positions for the final assault. Joan Mir (Suzuki) fell from the fight, who went to the ground after six laps when he was running eighth and added his fifth zero of the course.
The transalpine, on the other hand, knew how to defend his position against Viñales and began the second half of the World Cup as he finished the first: winning. Among the rest of the Spaniards, Martín finished fifth, Rins was seventh, Pol Espargaró (Repsol Honda) was fourteenth, Alex Márquez (Honda) seventeenth and Raúl Fernández (KTM), twenty-first.
