Badosa withdraws and Sorribes falls in the second round in Toronto

MADRID, 11 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa could not finish her debut in the Toronto tournament, category 1,000 for the WTA, and retired in the second set against the Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, while the also Spanish Sara Sorribes gave in to the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.

Badosa, who reached the semifinals last week at the tournament in San Jose, United States, was trailing 7-5, 1-0 on Wednesday when he withdrew from the Canadian tournament with apparent physical problems. Injuries weigh down a Badosa who was making a stellar progression this 2022.

The Catalan, who became number two in the world in April, said goodbye early in Toronto, where she is facing the important challenge of the US Open. Badosa suffered a lot with her serve and, although she managed to dodge the ‘break’ on many occasions, she ended up giving in.

Putintseva recovered from the break suffered in the third game and turned the set around with apparent authority. After the first game of the second set, Badosa decided to withdraw from what was his Toronto debut. Meanwhile, Sorribes could not beat her second rival, a Sabalenka who won 6-4, 6-3, two tight sets.

After a hard-fought debut, the player from Castellón fell to the sixth seed, although the match did not have a clear dominator, full of ‘breaks’, and could go anywhere. The Belarusian put a 3-0 in direct duels with the Spanish, also victorious last year and the previous one in Rome and Ostrava.
