Badosa overcomes Niemeier to advance to the quarterfinals in Bad Homburg

Roberto Bautista moves on in Mallorca and Roberto Carballés says goodbye

MADRID, 25 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg tournament (Germany), in the WTA 500 category and played on grass, after coming back this Tuesday against the German Jule Niemeier (4-6, 6-2, 6- 1), while Roberto Bautista has made it to the same round at the Mallorca Championships, an ATP 250 event that is also held on grass, and Roberto Carballés has said goodbye.

The Catalan was forced to turn the match around after giving up the first set, in which the German, who in the first round had eliminated the tournament favorite, the Greek Maria Sakkari, won thanks to a solitary break in the last game.

Badosa began to right things in a second set that began with a 3-0 that cut off a break from Niemeier, but which she canceled with a counterbreak. Already in the final set, she signed three breaks that allowed her to close the contest after one hour and 52 minutes of play. Her opponent in the next round will be the winner of the duel between the Russian Diana Shnaider and the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska.

Meanwhile, in Mallorca, Bautista also had to row to win against the Frenchman Ugo Humbert (3-6, 6-3, 6-4), who had managed to get ahead. A break in the second game earned the Frenchman, world number 16 and second seed, to take the opening set.

However, the player from Castellón, finalist of the Balearic tournament in the 2022 edition, equalized the match after breaking his opponent’s serve twice in the second set, and in the third set a break in the fifth game was enough to put an end to the fight on his fifth match point.

Now, he will face off against fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils, who this Tuesday got rid of Roberto Carballés from Tenerife, number 65 in the ATP ranking. A ‘break’ in each of the two sets played gave the pass to the Frenchman, who on Monday had eliminated the Austrian Dominic Thiem.
