Award-winning cyclist Davide Rebellin dies after being run over

MADRID, 30 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The award-winning Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin died this Wednesday at the age of 51 after being run over while training with his bicycle in Montebello Vicentino (Italy), according to local media reports.

Rebellin, who retired as a professional this year after a long career that began in 1992, lost his life after being hit by a truck while driving through the Veneto town.

His extensive list of honors includes three Walloon Arrows (2004, 2007 and 2009) or the ‘Monument’ of Liege-Bastogna-Liege (2004), as well as one Tirreno-Adriatico (2001) and one Paris-Nice (2008) and also a Clásica de San Sebastián (1997), among other triumphs.

There were 61 victories achieved by the Italian, born in San Bonifacio, throughout his career. Despite being a specialist in one-day or explosive races, he came sixth overall in the 1996 Giro d’Italia and seventh in the Vuelta a España of the same year.

His last victory was in the fifth stage of the 2017 Tour of Iran, when he was a member of Kuwait-Cartucho.es, and his current team was the Italian Work Service Vitalcare Vega. However, his greatest achievements were at the Gerolsteiner, where he was from 2002 until his disappearance in 2008.
