Augusto Fernández: “The goal is to win the World Cup, but we’re going race by race”

MADRID, 14 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Moto2 rider Augusto Fernández (Red Bull KTM Ajo) acknowledged that his goal is “to win the World Championship”, but going “race by race” to show his best level, highlighting the importance of “scoring high on bad days” to have regularity in the final stretch of the season.

“The objective is to win the World Championship, but we go race by race to give our best every weekend. It is clear that if I see myself with the possibility of winning more races, I will go for it, but without going crazy,” he declared. the man from Madrid in an interview with Ajo.

Augusto Fernández goes into the summer break as co-leader of the championship, tied with Celestino Vietti (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) and having won the last two races. “We want to continue along this line. It is important to know how to score high on bad days and not go looking to win them all. In the end, that is the mentality that we have followed until now,” he assured.

Of the eleven grand prix contested, the pilot keeps “these last races” and “the end of the first part of the season” because “it has been very good”. “The weekend in Germany was brutal because we dominated quite a bit and did a great job. The Dutch Grand Prix was also very good, all the victories have been. We have done a great job in all of them, but if I had to stay with one would be with Sachsenring”, explained.

The last race was held in Assen, where the man from Madrid won victory number 50 for Spanish motorcycling on that track. “It is a circuit that I like a lot and where I have always obtained good results, even in smaller categories. I also won my first important race there. I have always been good at it and, arriving as we did this year and after the victory in Germany It has been an incredible way to end the first half of the year. You can’t ask for more,” he said.

“SINCE WE LANDED IN EUROPE EVERYTHING HAS BEEN ON THE ROAD”

“At the beginning of the year I had the same expectations, which was to fight for the World Cup. However, with the beginning of the year that we had, everything became a bit difficult. We dropped a lot from the leaders, but we never lost hope. It is always said that the season is very long, but the results did not arrive,” said Fernández.

The man from Madrid started to get good results when the races started in Europe. “Practically since we landed in Europe everything has been on track, especially from Jerez with that fourth place and the victory in Le Mans. We have improved the expectations we had at the beginning of the year, but not those before the season started. We are where we have to be.”

For the lap after the break, he is clear about where he would like to improve, in “the qualifying”. “It’s something we have to focus on and work on because it’s important to be fast on Saturday as well. We always have the pace to be at the front, but there are circuits where it can be more difficult for you to fight for the podium or victory if you start from behind. It wasn’t like that in the Netherlands or Montmeló, but it did happen in Italy. The risk of leaving behind is greater,” he stressed.

“RED BULL KTM AJO IS THE STEP THAT ALLOWS ME TO FIGHT FOR THE WORLD CUP”

The rider from Madrid has arrived at Red Bull KTM Ajo this season, where to date he is having the best year of his career. “Joining the team has meant taking the step forward that I was missing in Moto2. After making a good finish last year, where I returned to pick up my fitness and my level, it is the step that allows me to fight for the World Championship”, he commented. .

“In the end, it’s been my goal for years and being in a team that has the experience of fighting for the Championship every year was what I wanted for this season,” added Augusto Fernández.

Currently, Augusto Fernández acknowledges that he has taken advantage of “the first week of vacation to rest and recharge his batteries” for what remains. “Now it’s time to train again and prepare fully to return in August with the same level or even better,” he concluded.
