Atlético de Madrid expressed its regret over the death this Thursday of a “legend, extraordinary person and friend” such as the former Cantabrian striker Marcos Alonso, who was part of the club for six seasons, five as a footballer and one as a coach.
“Today is a very sad day for the Atlético family and for all of Spanish football. Marcos Alonso, a legend of our club and an extraordinary person, has left us. His legacy and the values he transmitted will always be present among us and will be an example to continue for future generations. Rest in peace,” said the president of Atlético, Enrique Cerezo, on the club’s website.
For his part, CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín also “deeply” regretted the death of ‘Pichón’ Alonso, “a person who leaves an indelible mark on the club due to his impeccable professionalism, his love for the red and white colors and his big heart “. “We lose an extraordinary person and a great friend. My deepest condolences to his wife Mercedes and his children,” he remarked.
“Marcos was an excellent person and a great teammate. He was one of those players who make dressing rooms, one of those who adds up and gets along well with all his teammates, a ten as a person. When I arrived at ‘Atleti’, I was already at the club and he welcomed me wonderfully from the first day, he was one of those people who makes everything easier for you”, recalled Tomás Reñones, Marcos Alonso’s former teammate and ‘Team Manager’ of the first team.
The former defender made it clear that the Spaniard “was a guy who is very worthwhile. “When he returned to ‘Atleti’ after spending time at Barcelona, although he didn’t play much, his behavior was faultless, always helping and contributing to the group. I still can’t believe he left us,” he confessed.
