Atlético, Benzema, Djokovic, Alexia Putellas and medalists in Tokyo, among those awarded by the newspaper AS

Atlético de Madrid and its forward Luis Suárez, Real Madrid player Karim Benzema, Villarreal, Olympians such as Teresa Portela, Sandra Sánchez and Alberto Ginéz, tennis players Carlos Alcaraz, Paula Badosa and Novak Djokovic, or the Paralympic Susana Rodríguez were some of the winners this Tuesday at the Gala of the 15th edition of the AS Sports Awards

The AS Sports Awards went to Atlético de Madrid, for their LaLiga Santander 2020-21 title; Villarreal, for the achievement of the Europa League; the Spanish international Alexia Putellas, recent winner of the Ballon d’Or; Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema; paddlers Teresa Portela and Saúl Craviotto, for their silver at K1 200 and K4 500, respectively, in Tokyo; climber Alberto Ginés and karate fighter Sandra Sánchez, Olympic champions in the Japanese capital; and tennis player Paula Badosa.

In addition, the ATP world number one was also recognized, Serbian Novak Djokovic, who thanked for the award through a video, while jumpers Yulimar Rojas and Ana Peleteiro, gold and bronze in a triple final leap into history in Tokyo, they were awarded the ‘Olympic Moment’ for the hug they gave each other after achieving their respective successes.

For his part, former Real Madrid basketball player Felipe Reyes received the AS Sports Career Award; Fátima Gálvez and Alberto Fernández, the Olympic Prize for their shooting gold at the Games; the paratriathlete Susana Rodríguez, also a champion in Tokyo, the Paralympic Prize; tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, the Promise Award; the Uruguayan Luis Suárez, the America Prize; and the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation, the Social Prize.

The gala held at the Westin Palace in Madrid, introduced by the director of AS, Vicente Jiménez, and presented by the journalist Susana Guasch, was also attended by authorities such as the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, the president of the CSD, José Manuel Franco, the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Community of Madrid, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, or the president of the COE, Alejandro Blanco.
