Athletic has a curious way of winning matches

The victory against Sevilla this past Saturday in San Mamés has helped Athletic take a break after their situation in the table worsened after the defeat conceded a week earlier at El Sadar. But the most striking thing is that the victory against the Seville team had many similarities with the other two that the rojiblanco team had previously added.

The first thing to keep in mind is that this season, Garitano's men have managed to get the three points every time they have hit the opposite goal. If against Granada (2-0), Cádiz (0-1), Alavés (1-0) and Osasuna (1-0) have ended up conceding four defeats after not scoring a single goal, the opposite has happened against Eibar (1-2), Levante (2-0) and Sevilla (2-1), in which the lions have beaten the rival goal.

And the most curious thing is that those goals, the six that the Bilbao team has in this League, have arrived two by two. That is, when the rojiblancos footballers have hit the rival goal they have not only scored a goal, but they have scored them in pairs.

So, It was Unai López who opened the can in Ipurua by giving the victory to Garitano's men with two goals. The first of them came near the break when he took advantage of a pass from Williams to place the ball glued to the goal post and put the 0-1 on the scoreboard. And after Kike García's draw at the exit of a corner, Unai López came from behind again to hunt down a Capa cross and beat Dimitrovic again from within the area.

Against Levante in San Mamés were Álex Berenguer and Iñaki Williams who sentenced the match in the final stretch. First it was the Navarrese who, after a deep ball from Dani García, knew how to make room with his body against rival defender Postigo to beat Koke Vegas with a crossed left foot. And then the fast rojiblanco striker controlled a good cross by Jon Morcillo from the left to score the final goal on an empty goal.

This past Saturday something similar happened against Sevilla, with the difference that Julen Lopetegui's men had advanced on the scoreboard through En-Nesyri shortly after starting the game. In the absence of a quarter of an hour for the end of the clash, a corner thrown by Morcillo, was prolonged by Mikel Vesga towards the far post, where Iker Muniain was ready to send the ball to the back of Bono's goal. And ten minutes later, a very precise center by Williams from the left to the far post served for Oihan Sancet to finish off in the race to beat the Sevilla goalkeeper to culminate the rojiblanca comeback.
