Cameroon’s qualification (beat Comoros 2-1) for the African Cup quarterfinals was overshadowed by the stampede that occurred near the Ombélé Stadium, where at least six people have lost their lives.
The event occurred when the crowd tried to enter the venue of the meeting. Officials at the nearby Messassi hospital said they had received at least 40 injuries from the stampede. “Some of the injured are in desperate condition,” said Olinga Prudence, a nurse. “We will have to evacuate them to a specialized hospital.”
The stadium, with a capacity of 60,000 spectators, was not intended to be more than 80% full for the match due to restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even so, numerous Cameroonian fans tried to enter to witness the match.
