The singer of ‘Girl from Ipanema’, Astrud Gilberto, has died this Tuesday at the age of 83, as announced by the singer’s granddaughter, Sofia Gilberto, on her Instagram profile. “Today I bring the sad news that my grandmother has become a star today,” she lamented, sharing some images of the artist.
The success Girl from Ipanema, by Vinícius de Moraes and Antonia Carlos Jobim, made her one of the best-known interpreters of Brazilian music. “Astrud was the real girl who brought Ipanema’s bossa nova to the world. She was the pioneer and the best. She became the second most played bossa nova in the world,” her granddaughter has praised.
The singer was born in Salvador (Bahia, Brazil) on March 29, 1940. She was married to Joao Gilberto, considered the “father of bossa nova”. Astrud moved away from the stage in 2022 after a long musical career consisting of 19 albums. She started her musical career in 1960. Three years later, she moved to the United States where she produced her first album ‘Getz / Gilberto’.
“I love and will love Astrud forever and she was the face and voice of bossa nova in most parts of the planet. Astrud will always be in our hearts and right now we have to celebrate Astrud,” her granddaughter concluded.
