The motorcycle world championship will continue to have the Dutch Grand Prix at the Assen circuit until 2031, after reaching an agreement between the management of the Dutch circuit and Dorna, organizer of the MotoGP World Championship, to extend the link between 2026 and 2031. the historic layout and the championship.
“A new agreement between MotoGP and the TT Circuit Assen confirms the classic Dutch track on the MotoGP calendar until 2031, extending its previous agreement that extended until 2026,” Dorna announced in a statement.
For the World Cup organizers, Assen is one of the fans’ favorite circuits thanks to its “incredible layout, its fantastic atmosphere and its unique final chicane.” A chicane that has been the scene of some iconic MotoGP moments.
Additionally, Assen is also the oldest MotoGP venue, having hosted motorcycle Grands Prix since the inaugural 1949 season, a “unique feat” in the modern calendar.
And in 2025 the track will celebrate the centenary of the first Grand Prix. “Almost a century after the event’s inception and 75 years since Grand Prix racing first visited the area, today’s permanent Assen TT Circuit only continues to build its legend,” noted Dorna.
In this sense, they assure that Assen continues to maintain the spirit that fueled its origins, but reimagining it in a “modern, safe and spectacular” race track.
The CEO of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, said he was “very happy” to be able to announce the long-term future of Assen on the calendar. “It was part of the first Grand Prix season in 1949 and no other place has been with us throughout these 75 years of racing that we celebrate in 2024. That is unique, but we do not return just for the history or the statistics. Racing Assen, even 100 years after the first races held in the area, is still something special and only gets better,” he said.
“It is a fantastic and modern place that continues to give us incredible races and iconic moments, and there is no better mix than the most exciting sport in the world running in one of its best settings,” added Ezpeleta, general director of the company that owns the rights to MotoGP.
For his part, the president of the TT Circuit Assen, Arjan Bos, said he was “incredibly satisfied” with this extension of the contract. “It reaffirms the status of the TT Assen as a standout event on the MotoGP calendar. We are proud to continue building the future of motorsport together,” he said.
