Arbolino wins an eventful and short Moto2 race; Öncü wins in Moto3

Canet and Aldeguer complete the podium in the intermediate category and Acosta finishes ninth

The Turk surpasses Sasaki in the light class and does a favor for Masià, who retains the lead

MADRID, 22 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Italian rider Tony Arbolino (Kalex) has won the eventful Moto2 race of the Australian Grand Prix, which could not be completed due to heavy rain and strong gusts of wind, and has topped a podium completed by the Spanish Arón Canet (Kalex) and Fermín Aldeguer (Boscoscuro), while the Turkish Deniz Öncü (KTM) has won in Moto3, a category that the Spanish Jaume Masià (Honda) continues to lead despite finishing eighth.

Arbolino, who started the race at Phillip Island eighth, took advantage of the 15 seconds he had over the Spanish duo to win the race when Race Direction waved the red flag on the track with 14 laps remaining, after that up to ten pilots went down, among them the Spanish Alonso López (Boscoscuro) and Sergio García Dols (Kalex).

With this, the transalpine (224.5) added half of the points -12.5- after not having completed two thirds of the race, which places him at 56 overall in the intermediate class led by leader Pedro Acosta (Kalex ), which has 280.5 units.

The man from Mazarrón crashed on the warm-up lap and was forced to start from the back of the grid, finishing ninth. Still, he will have the opportunity to be crowned champion next week in Thailand. The British Jake Dixon (Kalex), one of those injured this Sunday, remains third but loses a lot of ground (172).

As for the rest of the Spaniards, Jeremy Alcoba (Kalex) finished fourth after coming back from nineteenth position, while the ‘rookie’ Izan Guevara (Kalex), who started twenty-third, achieved his best result in the category by being sixth.

In addition, Marcos Ramírez (Kalex) was tenth, Manu González (Kalex) finished thirteenth and Albert Arenas (Kalex), fourteenth. Out of the points, Alex Escrig (Forward) finished nineteenth.

ÖNCÜ WINS IN MOTO3 AND DOES MASIÀ A FAVOR

In Moto3, the only race that could be held from start to finish, the Turkish Deniz Öncü (KTM) achieved victory after overtaking the Japanese Ayumu Sasaki (Husqvarna) on the last lap, an action that allows the Spanish Jaume Masià (Honda) , who was eighth, maintain the leadership of the light category.

The Ottoman, who signed the third victory of his career, led a podium that was completed by the Japanese, whom he surpassed in the last sector, and Joel Kelso (CFMoto), the first Australian to get on the podium in Moto3 since Jack Miller in the Grand Prix of Valencia 2014.

All after a test that nine riders failed to finish, including the Spanish Iván Ortolá (KTM), David Muñoz (KTM), Vicente Pérez (KTM) and David Salvador (KTM), and in which others suffered hard falls, such as Dani Holgado (KTM) on the formation lap or Adrián Fernández (Honda) when he was leading the event with five laps remaining.

With these results, Masià continues to lead the World Cup, although with only four points ahead of Sasaki. For his part, Holgado, thirteenth this Sunday, is 22 units behind the category leader.

Finally, Adrián Fernández was able to finish fifth, Xavi Artigas (CFMoto) – who started last – was sixteenth and José Antonio Rueda (KTM), eighteenth.
