This Friday, the Spanish swimmers Arbidel González and Emma Carrasco achieved their respective tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the CXI Spanish Swimming Championships in the absolute category, which is being held in Palma de Mallorca.
González (CN Barcelona) entered the Parisian shortlist in his own right in a very fast 200 butterfly final (1:55.66). For his part, Carrasco (CN Sant Andreu) reduced the Olympic minimum by three tenths (2:11.11) with an outstanding time that was also a championship record. Mireia Belmonte (CN Barcelona), waiting for the 400 freestyle on Saturday, collected bronze in these 200 styles.
Meanwhile, Hugo González (Real Canoe NC) won his third gold in these Trials, lowering a minimum (200 styles) that he already had and with his 1:56.48 he showed that he is more than prepared to face a great Olympic Games, close to beating his national record.
In addition, the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation (RFEN) announced the four Olympic relays for Paris 2024. Sergio de Celis, César Castro, Luis Domínguez and Mario Mollá, for the men’s 4×100 freestyle; César Castro, Luis Domínguez, Carlos Garach and Ferran Julià, in the men’s 4×200 freestyle; Hugo González, Carles Coll, Mario Mollá and Sergio de Celis, in the men’s 4×100 medley; and María Daza, Alba Herrero, Paula Juste and Ainhoa Campabadal, for the women’s 4×200 freestyle.
The penultimate day in Mallorca was a tribute and goodbye to Melani Costa. The president of the RFEN, Fernando Carpena, presented him with the Gold and Diamond Badge for his sporting career and his successes. Born in 1989, the swimmer from Calviá won world silver in Barcelona 2013 in the 400 freestyle and world champion in short course in Istanbul 2012, participating in three Olympic Games. In addition, she was European runner-up with the 4×200 freestyle in London 2016.
