MADRID, 17 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The former soccer player and former coach of RCD Mallorca Antonio Oviedo, one of the architects of the first promotion of the vermilion team to the First Division, has died at the age of 83, the Balearic club confirmed on Tuesday.
“Mallorquinism is in mourning. Antonio Oviedo (Cáceres, 1938) has died at the age of 83 after a life dedicated to football,” the Mallorcan entity reported. “The club wishes to convey its condolences to family and friends. A true legend of RCD Mallorca has left,” he added.
The striker from Cáceres was one of the members of the squad that achieved Mallorca’s first promotion to the highest category of Spanish football, in the 1959-60 season. After that, Oviedo played three more seasons in the squad, all three in the First Division. In total, he played 112 official matches with the team, in which he scored 18 goals.
In addition, he also served as coach of the first team. In just two seasons, he returned the club to the elite with two consecutive promotions, from the Third to the Second Division.
