Another setback for Russia before the TAS

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected this Friday the precautionary suspension of FIFA’s decision, adopted on February 28 after the start of the war in Ukraine, to exclude all Russian teams and teams from their competitions.

The president of the Arbitration Division of the CAS thus resolved the appeal of the Russian Football Union (FUR) against the measure adopted by the FIFA Council, for which the contested decision remains in force and the suspension of the selections and Russian clubs will remain while the procedure is resolved.

“The Arbitration procedure continues. The panel of arbitrators is currently being constituted and the parties are exchanging requests in writing. The hearing has not yet been set,” the CAS said in a statement.

Three days ago the same court also dismissed the request made by the Russian Football Union (FUR) to suspend, for the duration of the procedure, the execution of the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee to prevent all Russian teams and clubs from participation in their competitions until further notice.

On February 28, FIFA and UEFA jointly decided to suspend all Russian national teams and clubs from participating in their competitions until further notice, which implies the exclusion of Russia from the Qatar 2022 World Cup, for which it had to play the playoff

Russia will not play the playoffs for the 2022 World Cup

The Russian team had yet to play the playoffs to qualify for one of the three European places that still remain for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Their first game was scheduled for March 24 against Poland at home.

In case of overcoming it, they had to face, again in their field, the winner of the duel between Sweden and the Czech Republic on March 29.
