The Spanish shooter Andrés García won the gold medal this Tuesday in the Pre-Olympic of the men’s Olympic pit modality in Qatar and has guaranteed himself a place in the Paris 2024 Games, which is why he joins Fátima Gálvez as a Spanish representative in the date.
The 20-year-old from Cuenca won one of the two places in the competition, while the Turkish Oguzhan Tuzun won the other.
García, junior world champion in 2021 and junior European champion a year later, defeated the Italian Mauro De Filippis, world silver in 2019 and gold in the European Games last year and who had already achieved the Olympic place, on the shooting range of Lusail by 46-45. Meanwhile, Tuzun guaranteed his ticket to Paris by securing third place ahead of Maltese Gianluca Chetcuti.
“It was exciting. It was a very, very good participation for me. I didn’t think I would leave here with the place, but now I will work to win the Olympic Games,” García said in statements to the official media of the International Shooting Sports Federation. (ISSF, for its acronym in English).
With this, the Castilian-La Mancha becomes the second Spaniard to obtain an Olympic place in shooting after Fátima Gálvez, who guaranteed it at the World Cup in Croatia.
The Andalusian, ninth in the Qatari event, was proclaimed Olympic champion in Tokyo in the mixed pit modality together with Alberto Fernández, 24th in Losail and who will play for the ticket to Paris in the European Championship in Lonato (Italy) in the month of May .
