Andrea Medina triumphs at home and Mechaal leaves his mark in Gallur

The woman from Madrid returns to the top of the pentathlon six years later

First session of the Spanish Indoor Championship

MADRID, 17 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Madrid athlete Andrea Medina was proclaimed Spanish pentathlon champion, six years later, in the ‘indoor’ event that started this Friday in Gallur, a debut in the capital that left level series such as the one signed by Adel Mechaal in the 3,000.

Medina was a prophet in her land, champion in 2017, and six years later at home with a total of 4,216 points, a personal best, seventh Spanish all-time and Spanish leader of the year. The woman from Madrid dominated the combined and achieved marks of 8.68 in the hurdles, 1.79 in height (personal best), 13.19 in weight, 5.62 in length and 2:21.97 in the 800 meters.

Behind her was a very promising Under 20 athlete, Sofía Cosculluela, also from Madrid, and bronze went to Laura Aguilera, an Under 23 athlete from Malaga. Meanwhile, Jorge Ureña, national heptathlon record holder, dominates the event after the first day. The current champion of Spain and triple European indoor medalist performed 6.79 in the 60 meters, 7.50 in length, 14.52 in weight and in height he rose over 1.99.

Ureña, facing the outcome this Saturday, has a total of 3,447 points, one point above what he did when he achieved a record in Spain. The great novelty of the heptathlon was the presence of Eusebio Cáceres, also from Alicante, second with 3,207 points.

Meanwhile, Adel Mechaal’s solo ride in the first semifinal of 3,000 warmed up Gallur, almost doubling the bulk of athletes (7:47.92, best mark ever achieved in a semi of a Spanish championship). The men’s and women’s finals, this one with a direct final, will take place this Saturday afternoon.

In addition, in the first session of the National on the indoor track, the 200-meter qualifying rounds were held, with many personal bests. In the female category, the best was Esther Navero from Madrid (23.87). In men, the best was Fernando Virgilio Martínez from Murcia, with a personal best of 21.08.
