The Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, explained that he saw the need to “change the intensity” of his team in the match and his “bet” paid off, with the victory (1-3) over Espanyol with goals from Benzema in the last few minutes.
“We started very well, scoring early. Then we lowered the intensity a bit, we just handled the ball without being effective. When they tied us it was more complicated. The second half had a lot of interruptions. After 60 minutes, they dropped a bit of intensity, with the energy we have, a round trip match and we were very good there”, he said at a press conference.
The coach of the reigning champion valued a complicated game and his bet on Camavinga instead of Modric in the second half. “When he comes on, when the game is a bit broken, his energy helps us a lot. We won the game because in the end we had more energy on the pitch than the rival,” he said.
“It was slow (the game), we were not able to make good transitions. They positioned themselves well. We had problems because of this and I decided to change the intensity of the match. Every match has its story. Sometimes choosing is like betting, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. I think that today, the Madrid coach has bet well”, he added.
In addition, Ancelotti explained that it does not mean anything that he did not count on Hazard this time, although the game was complicated. “It could be an option to put him in, but I didn’t want to unbalance the team. I have total confidence in Hazard, it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t play a game, he will have time to play,” he finished.
