Ancelotti beats Ferguson despite missing out on his sixth Champions League final

The Italian became, with 191 in total, the coach with the most appearances in the Champions League

MADRID, 17 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti became this Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium the coach with the most games played in the Champions League, with a total of 191, but without a complete celebration when he was left out of what would have been his sixth final of this tournament. , after being eliminated by Manchester City.

At 63, Ancelotti sadly broke the tie he had in this statistic with the Scotsman Sir Alex Ferguson, who made 190 appearances, all of them managing Manchester United. Meanwhile, Reggiolo’s man divides his figure between 73 games for AC Milan, 50 for Real Madrid, 18 for Chelsea, 12 for Bayern and Napoli, 10 for Juventus and PSG, and six for Parma.

Of those fifty games with Real Madrid in the highest European club competition, based on two different stages (from 2013 to 2015 and from 2021 to the present), ‘Carleto’ has 36 wins in that section, five draws and nine losses.

Due to the resounding 4-0 conceded in his visit to the ‘citizen’ team for the second leg of the semifinals in this 2022/23 season, Ancelotti has already accumulated 107 wins, 43 draws and 41 losses in those 191 games. Similarly, he did not extend his record of finals played in the Champions League to six.

‘Carleto’ stayed in that box with the two plays directing Real Madrid (2014 and 2022) and another three as head of the AC Milan bench (2003, 2005 and 2007). Therefore, he did not increase the distance with respect to Marcelo Lippi, Alex Ferguson himself, Miguel Muñoz and Jürgen Klopp, who have four to their credit.

To make matters worse, Ancelotti will not have the option of playing for another title against Inter or of expanding his ‘Orejonas’ to five as coach. This setback prevented him from adding -for now- his eleventh title as a Madrid coach. His challenge was to equal the Frenchman Zinédine Zidane in that record, only behind the 14 that Miguel Muñoz conquered.
