Anabel Medina: “Spain has the ability to win the Billie Jean King Cup”

MADRID, 15 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The captain of the Spanish team of the Billie Jean King Cup, Anabel Medina, has assured that the “union” shown by her players invites her to think that they can win the title in the Finals, for which they have obtained the ticket this Saturday after overcoming against Mexico (3-0) in their tie at the Puente Romano Club de Tenis de Marbella (Málaga).

“Since I am captain, 13 players have passed through the team, out of 14 qualifiers we have won 11, we are the third country in the world… Spain has the ability to win the Billie Jean King Cup because today it has been shown that the union of a team a long time ago,” he said at a press conference.

The Valencian explained that the result against the Mexicans has been “very bulky” and perhaps “it has not been the reality of what has happened on the track.” “Now, on paper, it seems that this was logical, that Spain had to win and that it does not have so much merit. This tie has been won because a very good job has been done from the beginning,” she insisted.

“Spain was much better because of the work that has been done. Do we have a chance to win the Billie Jean King Cup? Well, yes, we do. Hopefully we’ll play at home, and the home factor is extra. I trust all the players who go through for the team and that they face the competition in this way. They are aware that we are a group, that those who play and those who don’t, all participate. We must go with the mentality that if we are united and work for it we can achieve great things,” he continued.

In addition, she was “very grateful” to her tennis players. “The commitment of all of them is more than evident; I just have to pick up the phone and they are all words of joy and illusion, of wanting to compete. As captain it is a source of pride that a player feels excited about coming to compete, that she feels a very big responsibility to defend his country. I am eternally grateful”, he stressed.

Regarding the venue for the Finals, Medina acknowledged that “there is a possibility that it will be played in Andalusia.” “We would be very excited. We have been playing away from home for three years, the feeling of playing away makes us sad, not being able to have family and friends nearby. Playing at home would be spectacular. We like it better on this stage, on clay and at outdoors, but the girls are evolving more and more on this surface”, he pointed out.

Nuria Párrizas, who secured the third point of the tie, also hopes that it can be held very close. “I, as an Andalusian, would be very happy that it was played in Andalusia. I would not care if it was on a hard court or dirt, I would love it if it could be played in Andalusia,” she said.

The woman from Granada also acknowledged that the victory is “very helpful” for her return to the circuit. “I allowed myself more pressure than normal. I started to think about the result when I was 5-0 and that hurt me, but when I found myself in the same situation again I managed to change it and not think about it. It helps me face to face to the competition because I’m going with a lot of confidence,” he said.

For her part, Sara Sorribes, who won her match on Friday, explained how it developed. “The only thing I focused on in my match was that the first games were long, I think I achieved it. That gave me some peace of mind when it came to seeing that I was feeling well on the court and that my feelings were good, that I was finding the way in which I could hurt him. I was prepared for anything that could happen this week and I’m very happy that it ended so well,” he said.

The rest of the team members highlighted the unity of the group. “One of the most important things to win is to believe it; as long as you believe, there are going to be options,” said Rebeka Masarova. “We are all united like a pineapple, and that can help us do great things”, added Marina Bassols.

“Women’s tennis is showing that everything is very even and whether or not there are big names in the game that is played, anything can happen. Sometimes you win against teams that have more names, other times others that do not have big names beat you. Everything It depends on the unity of the team, on the energy, on that specific day… Yes, we can win”, concluded Aliona Bolsova.
