Anabel Medina: “I feel privileged to have this team”

MADRID, 16 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The captain of the Spanish team for the Billie Jean King Cup, Anabel Medina, was “very happy” with the performance of her players after beating the Netherlands (0-4) and confirming her presence in the finals, a circumstance that makes her feel “privileged”.

“The spirit of the Spanish team is largely unity and wanting to represent their country, wanting to play for the team. All of them have done a spectacular job this week, they have played at an incredible level and we have to thank them for meeting us in the finals”, indicated the national captain.

Spain, the fourth nation with the highest number of trophies behind the United States, the Czech Republic and Australia, will face their second consecutive final after hard work and despite the casualties of Paula Badosa and Garbiñe Muguruza, the two Spanish players with the highest ranking on the WTA.

“We came psyched up to fight for it. We like to be in the finals and it is a prize and a reward for them who have done a spectacular job,” she added in statements to the tournament. “We are lucky to have a very wide range, which are capable of performing on different surfaces,” she explained.

“As captain it gives you headaches because you’re sorry to leave some players out, but it’s a divine problem to have to choose between the best. I feel privileged,” said Medina after the 0-4 culminated by the tandem formed by Aliona Bolsova and Rebeka Masarova, who epically overcame Demi Schuurs and Arianne Hartono.

Bolsova commented that “it is very difficult to enter to play when you have won” the tie. But in any case she was “super happy”. “We are missing the two best rackets and to qualify without them means we have a lot of chances in the finals,” she said.

“I was excited to repeat it with Aliona. Although winning or losing would not have made a difference, you will always be at your best in a match and you will never want to lose a single point, but I am super happy with the comeback,” Masarova said.
