An analysis of Brock Purdy’s fluctuating performance in his match against the Packers

There is no reason to overreact to the defensive performance of the San Francisco 49ers in their game against the Green Bay Packers. They sustained self-inflicted injuries on seven of their nine drives.

The Niners were rattled by the NFC’s hottest squad entering the playoffs, but it wasn’t because the defense was being outscored left and right.

The offense failed to generate a sensational amount of scoring. Outside of Wisconsin, not a single individual could have predicted that the 49ers would score seven points in the first half.

Early-down ball movement has proven to be problematic for a third time this season. The 49ers were merely less effective through the air on the road toward Cleveland and at home against Baltimore.

The outcomes of those games were impacted by several turnovers. Brock Purdy appeared to overcorrect over the conditions on Saturday night, which had a three-quarter impact on him.

I tallied eight passes thrown by Purdy that were not merely inaccurate, but significantly missed. A number of these throws were within a few yards of the line of scrimmage, which was the most alarming aspect.

Two or three times, Purdy was struck while throwing the ball, in his defense. However, Saturday night’s remaining yards on the field surpassed the total for the entire season. The following play provides a synopsis of the first three quarters.

The linebacker was instructed to defend Christian McCaffrey per the formation. Purdy verifies that the play is accurate.

Purdy assumes the responsibility of delivering the free rush as the defensive line retreats to their left, given the empty field position.

A half-count late for Purdy permits the defender to strike him. The ball sails past him, resulting in an incomplete pass for McCaffrey rather than an explosive passing play.

The components. For Purdy, playing in the rain has not been ideal thus far. A year ago, in his only rain-shortened game for the 49ers, he performed abysmally against the Browns.

His manner of inaccurately missing fundamental throws during that game was mirrored in his performance against the Packers.

His conduct indicated that this appeared to be a shared characteristic. He initially commenced the game donning a glove for his throwing hand but subsequently removed it due to the discomfort it caused.

Nonetheless, that did not appear to matter significantly. A game replay captured a specific moment where Purdy was observed wiping his hand during his drop back.

The rain was becoming an excessive distraction for him, ultimately posing a mental obstacle as well.

Except for encountering an elite defender or playing in the rain, Purdy is likely to produce a mediocre performance.

His performances in the losses to the Vikings as well as Bengals were not even this poor. The inclement weather during the divisional semifinal game is merely unfortunate.

In the divisional phase of the playoffs, 49ers quarterback Andrew Purdy received resounding praise from Green Bay Packers head coach George Kittle.

During his segment on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the star tight end recalled a specific moment from Saturday’s game in which Purdy’s display of frustration inspired him and refocused his attention on the game.

Kittle added, “There were also times during the game when Brock communicated with our players.”

“At some point during our MA [missed assignment] discussion, he was yelling at someone, and I said, ‘That’s exactly what I need Brock; I need you to yell at someone.'”

When McAfee inquired whether that was Purdy’s previous outburst of emotion, Kittle responded that it was not.

However, his outburst occurred precisely when the young quarterback was solidifying his position and concluding the game on a high note.

“It’s not the first time, but whenever he experiences a situation in which he has the opportunity to express himself, a switch flips, and the instant after that, he is back to cooking,” Kittle explained. “So, I thought, ‘Ah I’m not worried because Brock’s on it, I’m good.'”

In slick conditions against the Packers, Purdy and the 49ers’ offense struggled to gain traction, and it was not until the final minutes of the game that Purdy was able to connect with his receivers.

On his final game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter, he completed six of seven pass attempts.

Since assuming the starting job in the middle of the previous season, Purdy has led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game on two separate occasions and achieved considerable success.

However, a seemingly endless legion of critics holds the view that Purdy is merely a system quarterback and is grossly overrated.

As a result, numerous teammates, including Deebo Samuel, defend the second-year quarterback.
