Amy Pieters regains consciousness four months after her accident in Alicante

MADRID, 29 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Dutch cyclist Amy Pieters has regained consciousness and can “communicate slightly non-verbally” four months after a serious accident while training with her national team in the Alicante town of Calpe.

In a statement, her team, SD Worx, announced this Thursday the change in her runner’s condition, although at the moment the doctors do not know her long-term prognosis. “Amy recognizes people, she understands what is being said and she is able to accomplish more and more tasks,” the team said.

“Doctors cannot yet say what residual symptoms and remaining abilities Amy Pieters will have as a result of the brain injury,” he added. Alongside Kirsten Wild, Pieters had become Madison World Champion for the third consecutive year and also won the second stage of the Women’s Tour in 2021.

Pieters, 30, lost consciousness after the collision on December 25 and was taken to hospital by ambulance. The Dutch national champion underwent immediate surgery to relieve the pressure on her brain caused by her fall and in January she was transferred to her country in an induced coma.
