Amnesty International calls for the fight for human rights in Qatar 2022

The NGO Amnesty International will allocate twenty sections of your organization to ask the different federations players present at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, as well as FIFA as an organizer, that safeguard human rights of migrant workers in the Qatari country.

Amnesty International emphasizes in a statement that FIFA, as the organizer of the World Cup, has the “duty to guarantee” respect for human rights in the context of the preparations and development of the competition.

“As the organizing body of the World Cup, FIFA has a duty to ensure respect for human rights in the context of the preparations and conduct of the competition. This includes the obligation to hold your partners accountable of the World Cup and use their influence to pressure Qatar to fully reform its labor system“, said the entity.

Therefore, vTwenty Amnesty International sections will target national football federations with the aim of “actively intervening” to guarantee the rights of migrants in the World Cup in Qatar, scheduled for 2022.

They also believe that football federations should demand that FIFA use its voice to urge, both privately and publicly, the government of Qatar to fulfill its labor reform program before the World Cup begins.

According to Amnesty, Qatar must “strengthen the implementation of its labor reforms” and end “impunity” for employers who commit abuses if it intends to fully deliver on its promises to protect workers' rights.

Specific, the Spanish branch of the organization, intends to meet with the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, to discuss the situation in Qatar and other sports and human rights issues, such as the 2021 Spanish Super Cup, to be held in Saudi Arabia next January.

In this regard, Amnesty recalls that the RFEF announced last year, before the 2020 Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, a program of actions aimed at improving the situation of women in this country. “Unfortunately, the situation, a year later, is still the same or worse,” they lamented.

Little progress in Qatar

Amnesty emphasizes that, since he was awarded the organization of the FIFA World Cup for 2022, Qatar faces stricter control of its record on the rights of migrant workers, although it has not made much progress in this regard.

In recent years, Qatar has introduced a number of major reforms, such as the modification of the legislation to allow freedom of movement for workers.

“But nevertheless, many migrant workers have yet to benefit from these changes and they will remain trapped in the vicious cycle of exploitation as long as these reforms are not fully implemented “, denounced the Director of Economic and Social Justice of Amnesty International, Steve Cockburn.
