America’s Cup and World Sailing will invest in Barcelona’s Blue Economy

BARCELONA, 24 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The 37th America’s Cup Barcelona and World Sailing –international sailing federation– agreed on a mutual investment in sustainability, which will focus on investing in local community projects as part of Barcelona’s Blue Economy, as well as the work that supports the 2030 Agenda, World Sailing’s sustainability strategy for the sport.

AC37 Event Ltd, promoter of the upcoming America’s Cup in Barcelona, promoted investment in Barcelona’s Blue Economy, which uses a sustainable development model in the marine sector in order to generate positive economic and social results, while protecting the region’s valuable marine ecosystems.

Together with World Sailing, they will also develop the ‘AC37 Sustainability Charter’ that will define the event’s commitments in this area, in line with the 2030 Agenda.

AC37 Event Ltd CEO Grant Dalton is proud to continue to drive tangible investment in Barcelona’s blue economy, as well as other broader sustainability projects based on the now mandatory requirement that all teams use boats of Zero Emissions support with hydrogen engine and equipped with foils (hydrofoils).

“One of the attractions of Barcelona as the venue for the 37th America’s Cup was its important drive for the development of a circular blue economy that promotes sustainable economic and social development, and we wanted to add real value to this situation and not just participate in it” Dalton stated.

“When we started discussions for the declaration of the America’s Cup as a World Sailing Special Event, it became clear that both organizations were closely aligned in prioritizing investment as a positive contribution to specific Blue Economy projects in Barcelona,” he added.

World Sailing’s Special Event status for the 37th America’s Cup incorporates all of its associated regattas, including the America’s Cup Match, the America’s Cup Challenger Selection Series, the America’s Cup Preliminary Regattas, and the Youth and Women’s America’s Cup Regattas .

The agreement will also establish the Regatta Rules (America’s Cup edition), which will establish the rules of competition for all regattas in the 37th America’s Cup. World Sailing will also appoint the International Jury comprised of international umpires appointed for the America’s Cup.

It also includes the confirmed appointments to the America’s Cup Refereeing Panel which will consist of David Tillett, Graham McKenzie and Bryan Willis; the Head of Umpires, Richard Slater; and the Regatta Management, which will once again be commanded by Iain Murray as the person in charge; as well as the anti-doping program, in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code.
