Alonso: “We couldn’t make the last lap, a Ferrari was in the middle of the entire second sector”

MADRID, 8 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso (Alpine) lamented the eleventh position in which he will start this Sunday at the Miami Grand Prix, the fifth round of the World Cup, and criticized his compatriot Carlos Sainz -without naming him- by assuring that “no” they were able to “do nothing” in the second sector of the last lap because “a Ferrari was in the middle” the whole time.

“It was a shame, but we couldn’t do the last lap (of Q2), a Ferrari was in the middle of the whole second sector. So we lost four tenths and I was improving six tenths on my previous lap. I came out of turn 16 with a better tenth, but in the end losing four due to traffic is almost unacceptable,” he added.

Asked about the options this Sunday, the two-time world champion expects movement on the American asphalt. “I think there will be ‘safety cars’ and opportunities. We started in 11th position, on the clean side,” recalled Fernando Alonso.

Finally, the Alpine driver was once again annoyed by Carlos Sainz’s attitude on the last lap of Q2. “We’ll see how many penalty positions they put on the Ferrari, although I think we’ll start eleventh and from there we’ll see what can be done,” he said.
