The Spanish driver Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who will start ninth in the British Grand Prix race, has acknowledged that they risked “too much” in Q1 and that they have been one step away from being left out, and has indicated that on Sundays They are usually his “strong point” and that he will have to “return” in Silverstone.
“In Q1 we had more margin, but in the end we came out with the used tires just to cover the position and we risked too much, because we passed fifteenth, but whoever doesn’t risk, doesn’t win. We had two new tires for Q3,” he said in statements to DAZN after the qualifying session.
In addition, the Asturian explained that they have not been “very fast all weekend”, but that even so “the strategy was the right one”: “take a risk in Q1 and have those two tires”. “Both in Barcelona and in Austria and here, in fast corners it seems that we suffer a little more, but the race is tomorrow. Sundays are usually our strong point and we will see if we can come back,” he explained.
Finally, Alonso downplayed the fact that the two McLarens finished second and third in qualifying. “McLaren has gone fast, but you have to see last year as well; many patterns from last year are repeated. Williams started in Q3 here, in Monza they did very well and this year they will go very well again,” he declared.
“We will do the math in Abu Dhabi, because if not, every Saturday is going to be a crazy number of circuits that are good for one or the other.
