The German tennis player Alexander Zverev has re-injured his right ankle, after suffering a bone edema in his right foot during his intense rehabilitation training, for which he will miss the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals with the German team, As reported on Monday by the German Tennis Federation (DTB).
Zverev was in the process of recovering from a rupture of three lateral ligaments in his right ankle, which he suffered during the Roland Garros semifinal against Rafael Nadal on June 3. For this reason, the current Olympic champion had the intention of reappearing in the Davis Cup, although the player himself explained that during yesterday’s training he “suffered pain” in his foot that was operated on and that “prevents” him from playing.
In this way, the 25-year-old tennis player will miss the matches, which will be played in Hamburg against France (September 14), Belgium (September 16) and Australia (September 18), although he will accompany his teammates to encourage them in search of from going to the final phase.
“Being in the Davis Cup in my hometown was my big goal, which has kept me motivated for the last few weeks. I have tried everything to be here, but these new problems force me to leave,” he said.
Therefore, Yannick Hanfmann, 30, will replace Zverev in the national team. The two best teams will advance to the quarterfinals of the competition and the final will be held in Malaga from November 22 to 27.
